Policy Development: Support the Policy Director and Deputy Policy Director by researching, analyzing, and crafting innovative policy proposals that address critical civil and human rights issues. The ability to analyze current laws and data to identify key trends and areas for policy improvement is essential. Develop well-structured, extensively researched, and comprehensive policy proposals for presentation to policymakers, elected officials, and relevant stakeholders. All proposals must align with JULIAN's values and principles. ● Legislative Research: Conduct comprehensive research on existing laws, regulations, and proposed legislation related to JULIAN's mission. Be able to track legislative proposals and bills throughout all stages of the legislative process. ● Data Analysis: Collect, organize, and analyze data to provide evidence-based policy recommendations. Proficiency in statistical tools and methodologies will be valuable for assessing the potential impact of proposed policy changes. Familiarity with submitting Freedom of Information Act requests is desired. ● Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams within JULIAN, including legal, communications, and organizing teams, to ensure policy proposals align with broader organizational strategies and JULIAN’s commitment to serving the communities that we work within. ● Policy Communication: Translate complex policy concepts into accessible language for various audiences, including staff, volunteers, donors, and the general public. Support the development of educational materials and policy briefs to raise awareness and understanding of key issues. ● Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitor policy implementation and impact, track relevant legislative developments, and evaluate policy initiatives' effectiveness. Data-driven recommendations for improvements will be crucial.
$60,000 - $65,000 salary per year. The range listed is one component of the total compensation package for employees

JULIAN seeks a Policy Analyst to join its growing team. The analyst will be responsible for conducting policy research, drafting reports and other materials, and representing the organization in coalition meetings and with other aligned stakeholders.

JULIAN’s mission is to attack discrimination in all forms through litigation, advocacy, technology, and policy to exact justice, foster equality, and advance civil and human rights law. We do this to protect and uplift the voices of individuals and communities subjected to hate crimes and rights violations. Our intention is to revive the spirit, effectiveness, strategies, and impact of the civil rights movement. We envision a world where every American is treated and protected equally under the law.

Founded in 2020 by Jill Collen Jefferson and named after the great civil rights leader Julian Bond, JULIAN is a nonprofit organization with its mission rooted in Mississippi soul. JULIAN is funded by national foundations such as Ford Foundation, Kellogg Foundation, Public Welfare Foundation, Borealis Philanthropies, Lear Family Foundation, and others. In addition to receiving generous support from foundation partners, we are cultivating new gifts from major donors and corporations.

About the Role

As the policy analyst, you’ll play a key role in researching civil and human rights policies; creating reports, policy briefings, and communications materials; and representing the organization in meetings with the communities we serve and our other stakeholders. Working closely with the Policy Director and Deputy Policy Director, you’ll help JULIAN stay true to its mission of creating equitable opportunities for people and culture to thrive.

JULIAN is looking for someone who is organized, communicative, curious, detail-oriented, and experienced to support a wide range of policy priorities. The ideal candidate will be able to manage and execute qualitative and quantitative policy research projects, have excellent written and verbal

communication skills, demonstrate patience, and be able to thrive in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. You should have experience in the fields of civil and human rights, an understanding of the legislative process and the criminal-legal system, and demonstrated qualitative and quantitative research skills. Experience with project management, graphic/visual design, and data visualization will be valuable.

● Supports JULIAN’s policy priorities by analyzing current policies and the potential effects of policy proposals

● Compellingly communicates the benefits, costs, and risks associated with specific policy proposals to policy stakeholders and members of the general public

● Expands the capacity of JULIAN's team by attending policy conferences and convenings and deepening our relationships with allied organizations

Travel

Travel is not a regular part of the duties but occasional travel may be required.
