Jill took on a small Mississippi town’s police. Then they arrested her.
At JULIAN, we are committed to exposing and combating systemic racism and police misconduct. Recently, our founder, Jill Collen Jefferson, was arrested in Lexington, Mississippi, while documenting a traffic stop. She chose to be jailed rather than pay a $35 release fee, highlighting her dedication to uncovering the truth about the local police force's discriminatory practices. This act, along with our advocacy, prompted a Justice Department investigation into the department's alleged false arrests, excessive force, and other abuses.
Lexington, a predominantly Black town, has faced systemic racism and police misconduct. At JULIAN, we gathered evidence of these abuses, including targeting Black residents and destroying evidence. Our efforts, including meetings with officials and federal lawsuits, brought national attention and led to a federal probe similar to those in larger cities.
Despite challenges, including Jill's own arrest, we at JULIAN remain dedicated to justice and equality. Our work has resulted in significant legal actions and a historic investigation into Lexington’s police department, reflecting our broader fight for civil rights in rural America.
